Tecmo at 20 – New York Jets Part 1

Quite possibly the greatest game of all-time

WRITTEN BY GREG

It is the fall of 1991.  I have borrowed the Nintendo game Tecmo Super Bowl from a family friend, and having just the experience of NES PlayAction Football on my brain, I was blown away.  I mean life-changing.  Stats being kept?  Real-life rosters?  The Chiefs?!?!  I was hooked from the beginning.

Now, it’s 20 years later.  And I still play at least one Tecmo season a year.  I keep fairly extensive records (and now for each team) and have since my college days.  Wanting to document my latest season as Tecmo begins its 3rd decade, I chose the New York Jets to be my team of destiny.

The following account details the games played by the New York Jets and will be broken up into 5 segments:  Games 1-4, Games 5-8, Games 9-12, and Games 13-17 of the regular season, the playoffs, and hopefully, the Super Bowl.

First, a brief overview of the Jets roster.  Led by QB Ken O’Brien (Ken O.Brien on the game), the offense is passable and I would rank it middle of the road to lower tier based upon team speed (no one above 44 in average), and a defense that is palatable with Dennis Byrd at MLB pulling the most weight.  Running backs Blair Thomas, Freeman McNeil, receivers Al Toon and Rob Moore, and a little known back from Texas A&M made this one of the more enjoyable seasons I have played.

GAME 1:  NEW YORK JETS (0-0) @ TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (0-0)

Thomas

JETS                      58          134 rush / 325 pass

BUCCANEERS     7           194 rush / 52 pass

In Week 1, the Bucs were no match for MVP Blair Thomas (8 rush, 132 yds, 2 TD) and the Jets.  New York pasted the Buccaneers in their first outing, as Ken O’Brien threw for 4 touchdowns.

SCORING SUMMARY:

O'Brien

JETS                 49       73 rush / 306 pass

SEAHAWKS   14      170 rush / 30 pass

In what would prove to be a monumental early-season game, eventual AFC West champion Seattle was blitzed from the opening kickoff, which Brad Baxter took back for six points to begin the game.  MVP Ken O’Brien lead an efficient passing game, as he threw for over 300 yards and 4 touchdowns, moving the Jets to 2-0.

SCORING SUMMARY

O'Brien

BILLS   0       77 rush / 414 pass

JETS    58     23 rush / 10 pass

The Jets demolished their stiffest competition within the AFC East division, routing Buffalo 58-0.  New York proved to have a relatively porous rush defense, but not in this one.  The first home game on the year saw the Jets allow only 23 rushing yards and 33 overall as MVP Ken O’Brien tossed 4 touchdowns and had 414 yards in the air.  Little used back-up running back Johnny Hector makes his season debut, rushing for 2 TD as he was in Excellent condition.

SCORING SUMMARY

O'Brien

JETS     52      48 rush / 351 pass

BEARS  10    57 rush / 75 pass

MVP Ken O’Brien was once again spectacular, throwing for just over 350 yards and 3 scores.  Blair Thomas once again scored both on the ground and in the air, and Johnny Hector punched in 2 more rushing touchdowns.  The Jets moved to 4-0 by crushing the Bears on their own turf.
